A Special Needs Mom Applauds the Message of Disney’s Zootopia

Blog· DISney· Entertainment· MOVE

Disney's Zootopia for special needs

I assure you, at some point, every special need parent dreams that, just like Disney’s  Zootopia‘s Judy Hopps, “anyone can be anything.”  We, too, yearn for a utopia. Where each life, in particular our unique children, contribute to society and are accepted in every way.

When the cute 4-foot tall bunny rabbit Judy decides she wants to join the ZPD (Zootopia Police Department), her parents, the ZPD, and the world essentially tells her she doesn’t have the goods. Painfully, they point out her obvious shortcomings. She’s not large enough, strong enough, or foreboding enough. How can she compete in a force comprised of predator rhinos, hippos, elephants, and buffalos?  They tell her she is better suited to work on her parents’ carrot farm in Bunnyburrows. Pointedly, they suggest she shouldn’t aim too high so as to avoid disappointment.

Therefore, Judy needs to work harder, study more vigilantly, and go the extra mile to compete. And she does so with a vengeance.  She graduates first in her class and becomes the first rabbit to ever make the force. Unfortunately, only to find that her challenges are just beginning.  This utopian city promises that big or small, predator or prey, you can be whatever you want to be.

Sadly though, even this society has preconceived notions about what she can and can’t do.  She is delegated to wear the orange vest of a meter maid. The citizens of Disney’s Zootopia find her “cute.”  What her boss, Chief Bogo, does not anticipate is that Judy’s distinctly rabbit traits make her perfectly suited to crack the big unsolved mystery. Her acute hearing and smell, nimbleness and diminutive size are her super powers.  This is exactly the case that the differently-abled community has been making for quite some time. Our autistic children and young adults are wired in ways that lead them to problem-solve in atypical manners.  Successfully. A society that is inclusive of these underdogs benefits in the long run.

Autism

In my son’s case, he learned from a very young age that he needed to work harder than his counterparts.  He started speaking at the age of four, and those delays trickled into cognitive thinking, reading, and socializing.  By the time he graduated high school, “harder” meant receiving the Headmaster’s Award for Excellence.  Not content with merely being accepted to an institution like Georgetown University, he “needed” to graduate summa cum laude with a double major.  In Government and Psychology, no less!

I must confess that I sometimes find myself telegraphing messages like Mr. and Mrs. Hopps. “Protecting” him by telling him he’s done well enough and doesn’t need to continually put himself out there is MY problem.  It’s too scary- for me!  And then I by chance catch a photo he is tagged in.  Ten texts later I find that the Congressional interns from the leadership team held a Facebook chat and he was representing the Bipartisan Disability Caucus.

Judy is correct that change does start within each of us. Disney’s Zootopia is made for special needs families. Shakira’s “Try Everything” is the just the reminder us autism and special parents need.  Watch out world. Marginalize bunnies like my Devin at your own peril!!

Visit their newest archeological dig- uncovering the site of one of the oldest Black churches in America. Here free and enslaved Christians came to worship during Revolutionary times at the First Baptist Church.

A step back into Christmastide- 18th Century style- might be particularly appropriate this year. #ColonialWilliamsburg #Virginia #Christmastide #Americanhistory

My last NY to FL road trip was in 1975. At that ti My last NY to FL road trip was in 1975. At that time, between Philadelphia and this destination there were miles and miles of billboards along I-95 (believe it or not, there are far fewer today- in the 70s, they numbered 250!!). Naturally, we were COMPELLED to stop here. Early social media at its best...

South of the Border was originally built on the North Carolina/South Carolina border in 1949 as a Beer Depot (NC was at that time a dry state). They capitalized on their location once again in 1962, when they started selling their now- “famous” fireworks (also then illegal in NC). Which is why this memory is such a standout for my family.

My brother NEEDED a stash of fireworks. Just what a kid from Queens craves? In the middle of August, and though we were not yet close to our destination, my parents caved. Those fireworks sat in the trunk of the family Impala (no air conditioning, mind you), and we proceeded to drive to Walt Disney World. Where the car sat, in the parking lot, on the blacktop, in near 100 degree temps, for over a week. How we didn’t cause a massive explosion at Disney’s Polynesian Village is a miracle that can’t be explained. Pixie Dust, perhaps?

Here’s to nostalgia folks. #I95 #SouthoftheBorder #fireworks #familymemories #itwasmybrother

My favorite part of owning the Marriott Bonvoy car My favorite part of owning the Marriott Bonvoy card? That annual free night. We strategically saved it for the @RitzCarltonAmeliaIsland. Located just 30 miles from Jacksonville, this barrier island was well worth the detour. And the Ritz? This property lives up to the name.

Though we just this once broke our “no elevators “ rule (we held our masked breath 😆) the Ritz-Carlton brand is one I trust for safety. #businesstravel #RitzCarlton #MarriottBonvoy #MarriottCleanlinessCouncil

Thankfully, the structure (and its Tiffany-stained glass windows) survived as @FlaglerCollege. Unfortunately, tours have been suspended due to COVID-19. I won’t wait another 50 years to return. 😉 #USNationalRegisterofHistoricPlaces #HistoricStAugustine #Florida

I haven’t stepped foot inside a church since @St I haven’t stepped foot inside a church since @StLouisCathedral on Ash Wednesday, but I masked up to say a quick prayer inside this oratory.

Built as the centerpiece of Ave Maria University and planned community, this Gothic steel and stone structure was designed by one of Frank Lloyd Wright’s students. Minimalist with the exception of the exquisite 30-foot sculpture depicting the Annunciation on its facade.

Inspiration. #AveMaria #oratory #Florida #middleofnowhere
