Happy Number 5 to Disney Social Media Moms Celebration “On-The-Road” | And Me!

Blog· DISney· Entertainment· MOVE

Disney Social Media Moms Celebration "On-The-Road"

A blog and a dream.  That’s how it started for me in 2011.  I am celebrating 5 years with Disney Social Media Moms Celebration “On-The-Road,” and I pinch myself… Mind you, DIStherapy did not start as a “Disney” blog.  It was to be a roundup of my life’s loves. My time with the DISability community. What I have learned as the wife of a restaurateur (DISsert). Challenges running as a Baby Boomer (Boomer DISh). And of course, my half-century relationship with the DISney brand.  I wrote and shared as therapy.  My own.

Mind you, I am no Silly Symphonies delicate flower, but a series of unexpected personal tragedies had pulled the proverbial magic carpet from beneath me.  My midlife crisis came not only with an empty nest, but with crushing financial consequences and a son on medical leave from college.  Writing helped.  A bit. Enter an invite to the very first round of the “On-The-Road” series in 2012.  Yup, magic just when you need it.

5 years of Disney Social Media Moms Celebration "On-The-Road"

2012: (Long Island)

They’re real!  All those Twitter handles I had collected came with beautiful faces and warm hugs.  Social media mentors, such as Maria Bailey, made us feel as though anything is possible as long as you believe.  I (start to) believe!

Tools of the trade.  So that’s how this is supposed to work?!  (I find myself saying that on a regular basis.)  We are introduced to apps that can supplement our storytelling.  Maybe you can teach an old dog new tricks.  I tinker with Disney Story, which is a stepping stone to what Victoria Lim (Managing Editor of Walt Disney World Public Relations) will introduce us to in following years; Videolicious and Magisto downloaded!

2014:  (Philadelphia)

Why are our Disney Parks memories so enduring?  Emotions make memories.  When it comes to Disney Parks and “On-The-Road”, JOY comes to mind.

Emotions Run High at Disney Parks and Disney Social Media Moms Celebration “On-The-Road”

2015:  (New York City)

You ain’t never seen a conference like this!  Held on the stage of Broadway’s Aladdin, the New Amsterdam Theatre was the perfect backdrop to the previews of the annual “What’s New” at Disney Parks.  (I was so inspired by what I saw, I booked my trip to Disneyland Resort Diamond Celebration the next day!)

I was struck by the power of the past 60 years.  Walt, just look at the empire you have created!!

Follow along!  I’m merely the Pixie Dust vehicle!!

And yes, through the past five years I do find myself writing about Disney more and more.  Thanks to Disney Social Media Moms Celebration “On-The-Road” I have found my happy.  In many ways, I think Disney saved my family. Disney Parks and runDisney transported us through some very dark days.  I am more grateful than I can fully explain.  No, I have never been invited to the “big” conference. And I have fallen short of that spot on the Disney Parks Moms Panel. But if I have learned anything at all, I hope that what I share on DIStherapy inspires happily ever after in others.  Five years and counting…

**  I received magical invitations to the Disney Social Media Moms Celebration “On-The-Road” events and was admitted free of charge.  This magical re-creation comes purely from the heart!

I'm so happy for you DidiMarie. You are a perfect "face of Disney" and so deserve to go to these events. Though, I must say, I'm also a teensy bit jealous. I didn't get an invite last year – or, this year. 🙁 Not exactly sure what it takes to get on – and stay on – the radar. At least I got to go in 2014 – and bring Ashley along. And we got to meet you! That was fun!

And it brought us face to face Heidi and Ashley! This conference may purely be a matter of geography; I must say spending less time in Vermont and more time in Long Island has some perks. Thank you so much for always being a stalwart chEARleader friend!

Wow, this is such a fun post! I was totally in the dark about all things Disney blogging/social media until way too late! 🙂 I first heard of any of it when a friend went to the 2014 conference in Disneyland, and immediately jumped in with both feet, traveling 5 hours each way to attend my first (and only, so far) OTR event! I wouldn't have changed that for anything. At that event and last year's celebration in Florida I connected with so many wonderful people, and fell head over heels in love with connecting people to things *they'll* love – Disney and otherwise! Thanks for sharing 🙂

Visit their newest archeological dig- uncovering the site of one of the oldest Black churches in America. Here free and enslaved Christians came to worship during Revolutionary times at the First Baptist Church.

A step back into Christmastide- 18th Century style- might be particularly appropriate this year. #ColonialWilliamsburg #Virginia #Christmastide #Americanhistory

My last NY to FL road trip was in 1975. At that ti My last NY to FL road trip was in 1975. At that time, between Philadelphia and this destination there were miles and miles of billboards along I-95 (believe it or not, there are far fewer today- in the 70s, they numbered 250!!). Naturally, we were COMPELLED to stop here. Early social media at its best...

South of the Border was originally built on the North Carolina/South Carolina border in 1949 as a Beer Depot (NC was at that time a dry state). They capitalized on their location once again in 1962, when they started selling their now- “famous” fireworks (also then illegal in NC). Which is why this memory is such a standout for my family.

My brother NEEDED a stash of fireworks. Just what a kid from Queens craves? In the middle of August, and though we were not yet close to our destination, my parents caved. Those fireworks sat in the trunk of the family Impala (no air conditioning, mind you), and we proceeded to drive to Walt Disney World. Where the car sat, in the parking lot, on the blacktop, in near 100 degree temps, for over a week. How we didn’t cause a massive explosion at Disney’s Polynesian Village is a miracle that can’t be explained. Pixie Dust, perhaps?

Here’s to nostalgia folks. #I95 #SouthoftheBorder #fireworks #familymemories #itwasmybrother

My favorite part of owning the Marriott Bonvoy car My favorite part of owning the Marriott Bonvoy card? That annual free night. We strategically saved it for the @RitzCarltonAmeliaIsland. Located just 30 miles from Jacksonville, this barrier island was well worth the detour. And the Ritz? This property lives up to the name.

Though we just this once broke our “no elevators “ rule (we held our masked breath 😆) the Ritz-Carlton brand is one I trust for safety. #businesstravel #RitzCarlton #MarriottBonvoy #MarriottCleanlinessCouncil

I haven’t stepped foot inside a church since @St I haven’t stepped foot inside a church since @StLouisCathedral on Ash Wednesday, but I masked up to say a quick prayer inside this oratory.

Built as the centerpiece of Ave Maria University and planned community, this Gothic steel and stone structure was designed by one of Frank Lloyd Wright’s students. Minimalist with the exception of the exquisite 30-foot sculpture depicting the Annunciation on its facade.

Inspiration. #AveMaria #oratory #Florida #middleofnowhere
