Four Ways the Trade Winds Have Changed | Pirates of the Caribbean Dead Men Tell No Tales

DISney· Entertainment· MOVE

Pirates Dead Men

Yo ho, yo ho, it’s Captain Jack for me. But I’m a contemporary, so that’s no shocker. But this fifth installment in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise is fresh; everything old is new again. Ever since The Curse of the Black Pearl I’ve been waiting. The curse has been lifted. It’s time. Pirates of the Caribbean Dead Men Tell No Tales is anchors-down the best voyage in fourteen years.

Pirates of the Caribbean Dead Men Tell No Tales Review

** A no spoiler review!!

1. Perfect blend of old and new, young and old.

Pirates of the Caribbean Dead Men Tell No Tales

Young Captain Jack!

You had me at Jack Sparrow, but a young Jack who shows exactly why there is a Captain Jack? I’m a sucker for a prequel; everything we have seen on screen over the past four installments makes so much sense now.

Hello Henry Turner

Captain Jack seems ageless, but young Henry Turner (yes, Will’s son) is some head-Turner. Get it?

FUN FACT:

Young actor Brenton Thwaites, who portrays Henry in this movie has been a fan of the film series since he was a schoolboy growing up in Queensland, Australia. No one was more delighted than he to discover that not only had he been cast as the young lead of the film, but that it would film almost entirely in…Queensland, Australia!

2. Those cameos!!

Will Turner, barnacles and all.

Not done in a gratuitous way, I thought these step-ins were genius, and vaulted Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales to legendary status. And not to mix metaphors, that’s all I’m gonna say about that…

3.  A young heroine who just happens to be an early scientist.

Astronomer Carina “Smyth”

How about that?! In an era where strong smart women were executed or burned at the stake as witches, this gal is plucky, smart, and also brings many touching moments to this movie. Oh, and saves the day.

FUN FACT:

There were 88 versions of Carina Smyth’s cherished diary before the one used in the film was finally settled upon. The covers are leather-bound, and aging on the pages was done in an interesting method…by dousing them in coffee!

4.  New Directors

New-to-this-series directors Joachim Ronning and Espen Sandberg not only harnessed the excitement of the original, but made it fresh. A fine balance of CGI and spot-on acting produced this franchise stand-out. Can they please do number six??!!

FUN FACTS:

Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg are remarkably enough not the first Norwegians to direct a pirate film for Walt Disney Studios. In 1991, the studio released another pirate film hailing from that country titled “Shipwrecked,” directed by Nils Gaup.

In the Execution Square guillotine sequence, the two heads detached from their former owners’ bodies were modeled after directors Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg!

If like me, you were less-than-anxious to see another Pirates of the Caribbean, have no fear; this version will renew your love of pirates!

Synopsis
Thrust into an all-new adventure, a down-on-his-luck Capt. Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) feels the winds of ill-fortune blowing even more strongly when deadly ghost sailors led by his old nemesis, the evil Capt. Salazar (Javier Bardem), escape from the Devil’s Triangle. Jack’s only hope of survival lies in seeking out the legendary Trident of Poseidon, but to find it, he must forge an uneasy alliance with a brilliant and beautiful astronomer and a headstrong young man in the British navy.

Visit their newest archeological dig- uncovering the site of one of the oldest Black churches in America. Here free and enslaved Christians came to worship during Revolutionary times at the First Baptist Church.

A step back into Christmastide- 18th Century style- might be particularly appropriate this year. #ColonialWilliamsburg #Virginia #Christmastide #Americanhistory

My last NY to FL road trip was in 1975. At that ti My last NY to FL road trip was in 1975. At that time, between Philadelphia and this destination there were miles and miles of billboards along I-95 (believe it or not, there are far fewer today- in the 70s, they numbered 250!!). Naturally, we were COMPELLED to stop here. Early social media at its best...

South of the Border was originally built on the North Carolina/South Carolina border in 1949 as a Beer Depot (NC was at that time a dry state). They capitalized on their location once again in 1962, when they started selling their now- “famous” fireworks (also then illegal in NC). Which is why this memory is such a standout for my family.

My brother NEEDED a stash of fireworks. Just what a kid from Queens craves? In the middle of August, and though we were not yet close to our destination, my parents caved. Those fireworks sat in the trunk of the family Impala (no air conditioning, mind you), and we proceeded to drive to Walt Disney World. Where the car sat, in the parking lot, on the blacktop, in near 100 degree temps, for over a week. How we didn’t cause a massive explosion at Disney’s Polynesian Village is a miracle that can’t be explained. Pixie Dust, perhaps?

Here’s to nostalgia folks. #I95 #SouthoftheBorder #fireworks #familymemories #itwasmybrother

My favorite part of owning the Marriott Bonvoy car My favorite part of owning the Marriott Bonvoy card? That annual free night. We strategically saved it for the @RitzCarltonAmeliaIsland. Located just 30 miles from Jacksonville, this barrier island was well worth the detour. And the Ritz? This property lives up to the name.

Though we just this once broke our “no elevators “ rule (we held our masked breath 😆) the Ritz-Carlton brand is one I trust for safety. #businesstravel #RitzCarlton #MarriottBonvoy #MarriottCleanlinessCouncil

Thankfully, the structure (and its Tiffany-stained glass windows) survived as @FlaglerCollege. Unfortunately, tours have been suspended due to COVID-19. I won’t wait another 50 years to return. 😉 #USNationalRegisterofHistoricPlaces #HistoricStAugustine #Florida

I haven’t stepped foot inside a church since @St I haven’t stepped foot inside a church since @StLouisCathedral on Ash Wednesday, but I masked up to say a quick prayer inside this oratory.

Built as the centerpiece of Ave Maria University and planned community, this Gothic steel and stone structure was designed by one of Frank Lloyd Wright’s students. Minimalist with the exception of the exquisite 30-foot sculpture depicting the Annunciation on its facade.

Inspiration. #AveMaria #oratory #Florida #middleofnowhere
