Frankly, when I learned that the Special Olympics World Games would be held in Berlin this past summer, I was uneasy. Yes, I understood the linked themes of healing but stepping into the heart of WWII darkness was honestly not a must-do for me.

I spent my one morning off searching for clues. Answers. As to how this city hatched such evil. I found none. It was later explained to me that, when rebuilding Berlin (both east and west) there was a purposeful decision not to include this horrific history. It was their effort to avoid building a sanctuary for future Nazis and other cultists.

THIS was all I could find. A free outdoor museum that towers above the neighboring parking lot that covers Hitler’s bunker. The “Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe” is stark, cold, and chilling.
